Used On The Exterior Of A Structure

Did you know that stucco is simply what you call plaster that is used on the exterior of a structure? Plaster goes on the inside. Stucco exterior has a long history and is now used all over the world. The Greeks and Romans used a mixture of marble dust and water to make a sort of plaster to artistically embellish walls and other things. Stucco and plaster came to be made from lime, sand, and water, and it has since evolved to be made with Portland cement and water and sometimes sand.
Durability of Stucco Exteriors
Stucco exteriors are extremely durable. Stucco is a Portland cement mixture that is applied over wire mesh or wood lath. Remarkably, part of its durability is its flexibility. Stucco exteriors expand and contract with moisture and humidity while being resistant to mold and mildew.
Insulation Built Right In
Stucco exteriors can keep your interiors at a constant and cool temperature. This explains its wide use in the Southwest and in the Mediterranean. You can also choose from many finishes and color can be added to the stucco as it is applied.
Stucco Exterior: Synthetic Options
Since the 1950s homes have adopted a technique to use a synthetic stucco. Synthetic stucco is also known as exterior insulation and finish systems (EIFS). It involves three layers: insulation board, a base coat, and a finish coat. You can identify the use of EIFS by tapping on it. If it sounds hollow, it is EIFS; if it sounds solid and heavy, it’s authentic stucco. The synthetic stucco exterior is more susceptible to moisture issues and is less durable.
Whether you are a restoring a classic Spanish-style home or building a contemporary home, a stucco exterior might be the house siding for you.
